Will QRCodes replace EAN/UPC barcodes on packaging in stores?

admin May 17, 2023 Blog, News

It looks like the days of the humble 1D barcode (a series of black vertical bars) on packaging is numbered. An effort coordinated by GS1 US aims to replace the EAN/UPC barcodes we’re all familiar with on products with the more sophisticated QRCode.

Where as a 1D barcode just stores a reference number for a product, a QRCode can store additional information such as the date of manufacture, the place of origin or even how to wash an item of clothing. QRCodes can also be scanned even if they are damaged and can be scaled to contain anything from a few characters to 4296 alpha-numeric characters or 7089 numeric characters. Contrast this with the humble 12 digit EAN/UPC code!
