Tiff files using Old Style JPEG Compression

admin January 22, 2013 Knowledge Base No Comments

Old Style Jpeg Compression (tag value 6) is an obsolete compression format that has now been superseded by ‘new style’ Jpeg compression (tag value 7) and should be avoided if possible. Softek products have limited support for files written using this format but best results will be obtained by switching to either the ‘new-style’ Jpeg or another compression such as Packbits. Support for this compression amongst other applications is also patchy.

If you are getting irregular results on the same files on different systems then it’s worth checking that they have not been compressed using the Old Style Jpeg Compression.

The Old Style Jpeg Compression was first introduced into the Tiff specification in 1992 but was overridden by the new-style compression in 1995.
